Our Director Dr. Mario Torres Jarrín participated in the Seminar “The Pacific Alliance Driver of Latin American Economic Integration” organized by the Finish Institute of International Studies and the Embassy of Chile to Finland. Dr. Torres presented the book published by European Institute of International Studies: Emerging Markets. The Pacific Alliance. Perspectives & Opportunities for Latin America.
He explained that the book is the result of the collaboration between two research groups, in the framework of the European Institute of International Studies (Inter-regional Dialogue and global governance research group and the Finance and Private sector research group) in collaboration with two international organizations: the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
The book examines the Pacific Alliance from different areas: foreign affairs and diplomacy, economy, politics and technological aspects, while analysing the opportunities that may arise from this process of regional integration.
In short, this book aims to present a deep and meticulous analysis on the Pacific Alliance. The book tries not only to offer a landscape of opportunities for the success of the Pacific Alliance, but also to make serious recommendations in areas of possible challenges.
Seminar: The Pacific Alliance Driver of Latin American Economic Integration
Wed 24.5.2017 at 10:00-12:00
Auditorium of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs
Ankkurikatu 5, 4th floor, Helsinki
The Pacific Alliance (PA) – an integration mechanism between Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru – has been welcomed by experts as a successful example of joint nation branding and a motor for deeper economic integration and liberalization of intra-regional trade in Latin America. However, it is not exempt of controversy. Some perceive the PA as a challenge to the broader integration of Latin America. The seminar will discuss the nature of the PA, its role in Latin American integration and the possible opportunities it provides the European Union in its relation with Latin America. The Pacific Alliance is of special interest for European investors and governments because the EU has signed free trade agreements with all its members. The seminar will also discuss the broader relevance of integration processes such as the PA in the current context of increasing protectionism and unilateralism in world trade relations.
